Will it hurt my computer or memory if I underclock it?

I have a Pentium 4 computer that accepts PC 2100 and PC 2700 DDR memory up to 2GB. I got a set of PC 3200 2GB times 2. My questions are:
1. Will they work at all?
2. Will my computer even recognize the 4GB or even 2GB?
3. Would it be better to only install 1 to keep it at 2GB as motherboard says it will support?
4. Will this harm my computer or the ram modules?

Only go up to what the motherboard will support, never over. It will not even recognize the 4gb and can fry the motherboard.

If your motherboard supports that type of ram (DDR) go for it, it just may run at a speed that is lower then what the memory is rated.

All the anwsers so far fail

Your computer will only read 3.xxx amount of ram. 4gb of ram is limited to the actual 32 bit OS. However there is some reserved for onboard memory.. your computer will only physically address 3.3-3.7 gigs

Your better off with 2 (high performance 1gb sticks) 2x1gb

more IMPORTANTLY 3200 & 2700 arent even mem speeds.. the mem speeds and latency are in sequence of something like 3-3-2-3… 2700 & 3200 are different types of ram..

I dont think you know what your doing therefore shouldnt attempt it.

And lastly..it CAN harm your computer if your putting unmatched ram into matched slots with different speeds ..or dropping ram into your computer with a different pin count lmfao..

If your computer supports matched pairs.. that is the way to go.

2x1GB matched pair is faster than one 2GB stick of equal speed… thats just how it is

its not possible to answer that compleatly with out knowing the model of your motherboard, but it is likely that it will accept the ram and scale back the performance of the ram to the same as a 2700 stick. It depends on your mother board what the maximum amount of memory per stick it is allowable, if it does not allow a 2gb stick it will probably not detect it. Either way it will not harm your system or the ram to give it a try and see if it works. Both pc 2700 and pc 3200 are both 184 pin desktop memory and 200 pin laptop memory, they will fit the same slot, whether they work of not is dependent on your MB’s compatibility
